Numeracy in Years 5 and 6
Year 5 numeracy
Key objectives to be achieved
Ø Multiply and divide any positive integer (whole number) up to 10 000 by 10 or 100 and understand the effect
Ø Order a given set of positive and negative numbers
Ø Use decimal notation for tenths and hundredths
Ø Round a number with one or two decimal places to the nearest integer
Ø Relate fractions to division and to their decimal representations e.g. ¾ is the same as 3 divided by 4, ¾=0.75
Ø Calculate mentally a difference such as 8006- 2993
Ø Carry out column addition and subtraction of positive integers less than 10 000
Ø Know by heart all multiplication facts up to 10 x 10
Ø Carry out short multiplication and division of a three-digit by a single-digit integer e.g. 567 x 8
Ø Carry out long multiplication of a two-digit by a two-digit integer e.g. 58 x 35
Ø Understand area measured in square centimetres (cm2); understand and use the formula in words length x breadth for the area of a rectangle
Ø Recognise parallel and perpendicular lines, and properties of rectangles
Ø Use all four operations to solve simple word problems involving numbers and quantities, including time, explaining methods and reasoning
Year 6 numeracy
Key objectives to be achieved
Ø Multiply and divide decimals mentally by 10 or 100, and integers (whole numbers) by 1000, and explain the effect
Ø Order a mixed set of numbers with up to three decimal places
Ø Reduce a fraction to its simplest form by cancelling common factors e.g. 16/20 = 4/5, (dividing top and bottom by 4)
Ø Use a fraction as an operator to find fractions of numbers or quantities e.g. 5/8 of 32, 7/10 of 40. 9/100 of 400 centimetres
Ø Understand percentage as the number of parts in every 100, and find simple percentages of small whole number quantities e.g. 75% of £400
Ø Solve simple problems involving ration and proportion
Ø Carry out column addition and subtraction of numbers involving decimals
Ø Derive quickly division facts corresponding to multiplication tables up to 10 x10
Ø Carry out short multiplication and division of numbers involving decimals
Ø Carry out long multiplication of a three-digit by a two-digit integer e.g.456 x 34
Ø Use a protractor to measure acute (less than 90 degrees) angles and obtuse (greater than 90 degrees) to the nearest degree
Ø Calculate the perimeter and area of simple compound shapes that can be split into rectangles
Ø Read and plot co-ordinates in all four quadrants
Ø Identify and use the appropriate operations (including combinations of operations) to solve word problems involving numbers and quantities, and explain methods and reasoning
