Reader Skills

Early Reader Skills

Ø      Knows where to start reading

Ø      Can point to individual words

Ø      Knows how to follow the text o to the next line

Ø      Recognises initial sound of words

Ø      Knows names of letters in lower case and capitals

Ø      Uses picture cues to predict story and unknown words

Developing Reader Skills

Ø      Recognises words from key word list and knows the characters and phrases common to the reading scheme

Ø      Is able to chunk up words e.g. st - or - m

Ø      Uses knowledge of blends e.g. ch, sh, fl, etc.

Ø      Is able to predict using the story and text

Ø      Can talk about story and characters, is beginning to use expression

Ø      Is able to answer questions about how they worked out unknown words

Ø      Is able to identify words that rhyme

 

Established Reader Skills

Ø      Uses a wide range of strategies to solve unknown words

Ø      Self corrects and re-reads to check their guess makes sense

Ø      Can answer questions about what they have read, giving reasons for their answers

Ø      Can use the word in word strategy e.g. can - dle - stick

Ø      Uses rhymes to predict words

Ø      Can infer meaning e.g. I think ....because it said .....in the text

Ø      Has a large, secure sight vocabulary

Ø      Reads a range of texts with confidence

 

Confident Reader Skills

Ø      Is able to use gap strategy to work out the meaning of unknown words

Ø      Is able to make predictions using clues in the text already read combined with past knowledge

Ø      Enjoys reading for pleasure

Ø      Uses contents, index and glossary correctly

Ø      Is developing skimming and scanning skills

Ø      Is able to share their opinion about a book, giving precise reasons for liking or disliking the story line, characters or illustrations

Ø      Is able to read aloud using expression and intonation

Ø      Reads, taking into account punctuation

Ø      Is able to read silently and still understand what they have read

Experienced Reader Skills

Ø      Is able to read different texts aloud, using pace and voice manipulation to create suspense, excitement and humour

Ø      Has a knowledge of different authors and is able to comment on their work

Ø      Has good library skills

Ø      Is able to make deductions by interpreting the language in poetry

Ø      Can scan through text quickly to locate precise information

Ø      Is able to make notes from text, ensuring that all relevant information is included

Ø      Understands how punctuation affects reading and interpretation of meaning

Ø      Is able to read silently for prolonged periods and the discuss in detail what they have read
