Family Holidayin Term Time

Thinking of Going on Holiday?

Pupils do not have a right to a holiday during term time. Only schools have discretion to grant leave of absence for the purpose of family holiday during term time.

Lengthy absence from school will be detrimental to a child's education.

If you have no alternative but to take your holiday during term time, parents/guardians are required to contact the headteacher, giving a reason why the holiday is taken outside of statutory school holidays.

Parents/ guardians are advised to apply for the leave in writing at least 2 weeks before the trip. At St Anne's all requests are unauthorised unless special circumstances are agreed.

If You Have to Take a Child Out During Term Time

Each request can only be judged on a case by case basis, taking into account individual circumstances.

These include:

 A child's attainment

  Their record of attendance

 Ability to catch up

It is advisable to avoid times when there are important examinations/tests.

If your request is refused but you take your child away, you will be breaking the law and your child will be marked as unauthorised absent.

Fixed Penalty Notice

If a family takes an excessive number of holidays in term time, or at a time which is deemed to be disadvantageous to a child's education, a school can request that the Education Welfare Team issues a fixed penalty notice.

Where a family deliberately takes a holiday in term time without permission from the school, and it can be demonstrated that the parent/carer understood that permission had not been granted, a school can request a fixed penalty notice.

Penalty Notice Charges

£ 50 payable within 28 days

If this payment is not made, the amount increases to £ 100 payable within 42 days.

Did You Know?

If your child goes on holiday for 2 weeks every year in term time regularly over their school life from 5-16 years old, he/she will miss almost 2 terms or half a year of education.

For every 15 days missed your child could drop 1 GCSE grade.

Trafford Children and Young People's Service are supporting schools to reduce the amount of holidays taken during term time.
